Step by step

Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go" ...
So Abram went, as the LORD had told him ...
Genesis 12:1,4 ESV

Step by step Abram (Abraham) travelled from Ur (situated in what we now call Iraq), then along the Fertile Crescent, via Haran (in modern-day Turkey), until he reached the land of Canaan (between the Mediterranean on the west and the Sea of Galilee, the Jordon River and the Dead Sea on the east).

The one true living God was turning Abram from his idolatrous background and moving him forward into his plan for his life. Genesis 11:27-32; Genesis 12:1-9; Joshua 24:2; Acts 7:2-5.

God's directive had a clear objective. That purpose would not be fulfilled instantly, but God's relationship with Abram would influence his descendants, nations and generations to come.

Even though he and his wife Sarai (Sarah) were childless and experienced ups and downs, God brought them through those circumstances and they held on to him.

Abraham’s obedience arose from his faith in God. He trusted God that he would fulfil his promise to multiply him and provide a land for his descendants to dwell in. Ultimately, there Abraham’s greatest descendant, Jesus, would be born, die and rise again. Jesus, in whom the promises of God are focussed.

Concerning Abraham the Lord said: "Listen to me ... Think of it! One solitary man when I called him, but once I blessed him, he multiplied." Isaiah 51:1-2 MSG.

And concerning himself Jesus said: "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit ... And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." John 12:24,32 ESV.

Consider the following:
- Trusting God. Faith.
- Obedience that flows from faith. Faithfulness.
- Small beginnings. Don't despise it.
- God is sovereign.
- Multiplication.
