Acts 6:7 - Multiplication

Following Jesus' death, resurrection and ascension, the impact of the gospel in Jerusalem by his followers was phenomenal. They were enabled by the Holy Spirit's power, as Jesus' had predicted. People were convicted of their need as they heard the message. Miracles accompanied the good news. Many believed and gathered together, publicly and in homes.

The religious authorities, who had condemned Jesus, were not happy. They tried to intimidate the apostles, insisting that they cease teaching about Jesus and the resurrection. But the apostles were committed to the commission given to them by God, to declare the Saviour's gift of repentance and forgiveness. Instead of capitulating to the threats, they were filled with joy and continued preaching and teaching about Jesus.

As the number of disciples increased in the city, the apostles' work-load also increased. With the result that murmuring arose, among the believers, connected with the daily distribution of relief for the widows. Some were being neglected. It was unlikely that this happened intentionally. Nevertheless, the neglect was occurring along social, cultural and linguistic lines within the same larger race grouping. Wise decision making, with reference to delegation, became necessary. So that not only the important needs of all the widows would be fairly met, but also so that the primacy of prayerfully spreading the word of God would not be hindered.

Far from being impeded, "the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith (Acts 6:7 ESV)."

Whether faced by coercion, manipulation or tempted by diversions, may God strengthen us by his Spirit. Helping us to remain faithful and fully dedicated to spreading the words of Christ and the good news of salvation. Salvation that is only available through him (Acts 4:12).
