Do this until Jesus comes back

Before the crucifixion, on the very night that Jesus was betrayed, he and his disciples had a meal together in Jerusalem. That Passover meal, consisting of lamb's meat, was eaten in memory of the powerful deliverance experienced by the children of Israel, many centuries before, when God set them free from oppressive slavery.

The historical event prophetically foreshadowed a far greater deliverance that was about to be fulfilled and secured by Jesus, the Lamb of God, when his intense suffering, death and resurrection would deal with the sin of the world forever.

During that time of table fellowship together with his followers Jesus introduced a simple practice that supersedes the ancient Passover memorial.

The Bible says that ”he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, 'This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood' (Luke 22:19-20 ESV).”

In this way our Saviour wants those of us who believe in him to frequently and thankfully remember his sacrifice on our behalf, which once-and-for-all-time secured our redemption and salvation. It is very important that we never forget how he provided for our forgiveness, setting us free from our bondage to sin.

Thinking especially of those who do not have the opportunity to meet in large numbers with fellow christians, because of the difficult circumstances you may be facing, it would be helpful for you to gather somewhere in small groups, together with family or with friends who also trust in Jesus. Enjoy that simple meal together, which Jesus introduced. Some bread and a drink made from the fruit of the grapevine. Let someone read from the Bible, explaining what God's Son Jesus has done for us. Talk together about this great salvation. Encourage one another. Ask the Lord that his Holy Spirit will help and empower each one of you to be a blessing for others. Sing praises to him for his love and mercy.

Revelation 1:5-6 (NET)
To the one who loves us and has set us free from our sins at the cost of his own blood ... to him be the glory and the power for ever and ever! Amen.
