CONVERSATION AT SYCHAR

Jesus was travelling from Judea to Galilee through Samaria, together with his disciples.

They went into Sychar to buy something to eat. Jesus, however, was tired and sat by a well outside the town. It was midday.

A Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. Jesus (a Jew) asked her for a drink. She expressed surprise at the request, because normally her ethnic people were despised and avoided by his ethnic people.

In the conversation that ensued the compassion of Christ towards her became very evident, as he helped her to understand who he is and that he is able to give her eternal life.

"If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water (John 4:10 ESV)."

"Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:13-14 ESV)."

Even though she struggled to understand she expressed interest: "... give me this water... (John 4:15 ESV)."

Jesus then proceeded to confront her sin.

It is at this point that any one of us, men and women, young and old, would start to feel uncomfortable. But we all need to realize that the reason why God sent his Son into the world was to to deal with mankind's worldwide problem. The fact that we have all sinned against God. It is sin that separates us from him. And it is only by means of the the cross and resurrection of Christ that the relationship can be eternally restored. By trusting in Jesus alone, who paid the penalty for our rebellion in full.

That's why Jesus has said, wanting everyone everywhere to hear and respond: “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news (Mark 1:15 NIV)!”

  3. He takes our sin and failure, and gives us His joy and peace and eternal life, why would anyone choose to miss out?
